Lower Zambezi National Park

About Lower Zambezi National Park

The Lower Zambezi National Park occupies the south-eastern corner of Zambia, bordering Zimbabwe and Mozambique and running along the lower reaches of the Zambezi River. Having permanent water flow from the Zambezi makes this lush park one of the most game-rich in Africa, where visitors are able to view the animals from specialised game viewing vehicles on walks with local guides, by motorboat or while canoeing down the placid waters.

The accommodation here is varied in terms of its style, featuring one of our all-time favourite camps in Zambia, Sausage Tree, as well as its sister camp, Potato Bush. That’s not forgetting the new, ultra-stylish Anabezi camp.

For travellers looking for something a little more family orientated, Chongwe River House is wonderful; think The Flintstones but with a luxury twist

Meanwhile, Old Mondoro is perfect for those looking for something more rustic and intimate.

The Lower Zambezi is the perfect middle stop on a trip through Zambia, where you can also visit the iconic Victoria Falls and the South Luangwa National Park, all within one glorious, unforgettable holiday; giving visitors three varied but equally fascinating experiences of this magnificent country.

The Lower Zambezi works really well as the middle stop in a trip through Zambia, often sandwiched between some time at Victoria Falls and the South Luangwa National Park, giving visitors three very varied, but equally fascinating experiences of this magnificent country.

Seasons

  • June to October - Peak safari season, when the cooler temperatures and lack of rains mean that the game viewing is at it's best. Some stunning plant life starts to flower, including the iconic Sausage Tree as the bush turns from a lush green to bright red. It can be cool in the evenings so pack accordingly
  • October to March - The warmest and wettest time of the year, when some camps take the opportunity to close as access becomes difficult. It is a great time of year for fishing and birding, as well as for seeing the plains game give birth to their young
  • April to May - A brief "shoulder" season between the rains and the dryer winter months - the bush is a stunning green colour, drawing in a variety of migratory birds and this is a superb time of year for spotting leopard

In The Know

    • For keen fishermen, this is a fantastic destination, with many lodges offering dedicated Tiger fishing trips onto the Zambezi, with September to December the best time to enjoy this
    • In between the walks and the game drives, you should take the opportunity to enjoy a leisurely canoe excursion down the Zambezi - this is a wonderful way to view the park and very relaxing too
    • With over 500 species of birds, the Lower Zambezi is a twitchers' paradise. Guides here are always keen birders too and more than happy to spend an afternoon with you and a bird book helping to identify what you spot
