The Cape Town bar scene is ever-changing, diverse and forever lively. Everything is catered for, from casual drinks to elegant evening soirees. Here is a selection of five very different bars that should be on your must see list.
The Sky Bar at the Cape Royale Hotel
If you're looking for drinks with a view, then the Sky Bar is definitely where you want to be. Located on top of the luxurious Cape Royale Hotel & Spa, this bar not only offers fantastic 360° views over Green Point and Lions Head. It also has a rooftop pool where you can take a dip and take full advantage of your evening sundowner. (Tip - bring your own towel or use one of theirs for R30)
- The Sky Bar is open every day from 8am to midnight.
- Address: 41 Main Road, Green Point
Cabrito
Actually part of the Mexican restaurant El Burro (and situated right below), this bar specialises in the strong stuff: tequila. With a selection of tequilas that will seriously impress, this place will put hair on your chest. It's got a great casual atmosphere and for those not brave enough to dig into their tequila selection there's wine, craft beer & cider on offer as well.
- Cabrito is open Mon – Sat from 3pm to 2am.
- Address: 81 Main Road, Green Point
Orphanage
Located on Orphan Street (which housed an orphanage back in the day), this is not just a cocktail bar - it's a cocktail emporium. Their menu is filled with weird and wonderful creations like the “More Tea Vicar?” - Vanilla infused vodka, rooibos syrup & lemon served in a vintage style tea cup. Their “Brimstone & Fire” that comes with quite a bit of heat is equally unique. They also give back by donating a portion of their profits to the St Francis Children's Home, a nod to the history associated with this area.
- Orphanage bar is open Mon – Fri from 5pm until 2am and Sat from 6pm until 2am.
- Address: 227 Bree Street (cnr of Bree & Orphan Street), Cape Town city centre
House of Machines
Café, motorcycle workshop & apparel store by day - prohibition style bar by night. This is quite a unique collaborative space with a strong hipster feel. They serve up beer, wine, cocktails & some specially sourced brands of spirits - perfect for the connoisseurs out there.
- The bar is open every We, Thu, Fri & Sat from 4pm until midnight.
- Address: 84 Shortmarket Street, Cape Town city centre
Le Roi Beach Bar
No Cape Town bar roundup would be complete without a Camps Bay mention. Translating to “The King” in French, this beach bar is a relatively new addition to the Camps Bay strip. It's a chic space with a relaxed feel and great sea views. The bar offers up everything including a selection of fine French champagnes and they have a rotating line-up of top local house DJs.
- Le Roi is open Tue – Sun from 4pm to 2am.
- Address: The Promenade, Victoria Road, Camps Bay
