Numbering just over 1,000, the endangered mountain gorillas in Africa represent the ultimate game viewing encounter. Found in only a handful of locations (Uganda, Rwanda and The Democratic Republic of the Congo), trekkers will journey through a series of breathtaking forest routes to discover these striking creatures, and to be one of the few people who get to see them up close is a once in a lifetime experience.
Gorilla trekking is one of the most exciting experiences in Africa; knowledgeable rangers will help you track a gorilla family, carefully guiding you towards them; giving you up to an hour to observe these majestic creatures. The gorillas are wild but have become used to seeing humans after years of habituation, so you can watch young gorillas playfully interact with their parents, while a silverback looks straight at you.
The trek itself requires some stamina and a degree of luck, but you will be rewarded with an unforgettable and magical encounter with these wonderful primates. Permits are required to view the gorillas but they are certainly a worthy cause, as the money raised goes towards maintaining the parks and protecting the wildlife.
Whether your gorilla safari takes you to the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda, which is home to just under half of the world's mountain gorilla population, or Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, we source comfortable accommodation for you to stay in. When booking with us, you’ll stay in accommodation matched to your exact needs; our experts can provide personalised recommendations based on their own travel experiences. You’ll stay in authentic safari lodges like Bwindi Lodge in Uganda or Bisate Lodge in Rwanda, both offering a traditional feel as well as luxurious facilities.
