3. Bobotie
The official national dish of South Africa, Babotie is a mildly spice curry dish of Cape-Malay origin that features minced beef or lamb, almonds, sultanas and an egg custard topping. It is usually served with pilaf rice or a hot sauce made from chilies, spices, herbs, and aromatics called a sambal.
4. Biltong
Born out of harder times, biltong is one of South Africa's most famous and beloved foods. Usually made from beef or game, such as springbok, the meat is cured in a mixture of vinegar, salt, sugar and spices such as coriander and pepper, then hung to dry. It's traditionally served as a snack and goes great with a glass of ice cold South African beer.
5. Malva Pudding
Originating from South Africa's Dutch settlers, malva pudding is a sweet and sticky baked sponge pudding made with apricot jam and is traditionally served with ice cream or custard. It is South Africa's answer to the sticky toffee pudding and served in many restaurants, but typically baked at home for Sunday lunch.
