An often-overlooked destination, Mozambique really should be high up on any Africaphile’s travel wish-list. Home to some of the planet’s most magnificent beaches, it also has a rich colonial history which can be enjoyed on this wonderful itinerary.
Things kick off with the beaches of the south at the White Pearl Resort before time is spent in the opulence of the Polana Serena Hotel in exotic Maputo. The Bazaruto Archipelago is the setting for the finale of the trip, where the uber-deluxe Azura Benguerra is the luxurious base.
Accommodation includes: White Pearl Resort, Polana Serena Hotel & Azura Benguerra
Overnight flight from London Heathrow to Johannesburg.
Connect with onward flight to Maputo and on arrival transfer to stay for four nights at the White Pearl Resort. On a magnificent private beach with white silky sand sit 22 luxury cabins, each cool and airy with a private pool and stunning views. In Mozambique’s deep south, and located in a hideaway cove, it offers an abundance of marine life with serious diving and sightings of whales, sharks, dolphins and turtles. Horse-riding and in-room massages are available and there is a superb restaurant & bar, where the tapas are particularly good.
Return by road to Maputo to stay for two nights at the Polana Serena Hotel.
The historic Polana is a true Grande Dame which has sat proudly in the heart of Maputo since the early 1920’s. The colonial buildings reflect the city’s Indo-Portuguese legacy, with many of the guest rooms enjoying views of the palm-fringed Bay of Maputo. Guests can expect superlative, old-style service and facilities which include two open-air swimming pools, a spa, modern gym, beautiful terrace, gardens and art gallery.
Fly from Maputo to Vilanculos and connect onwards by helicopter to Benguerra Island to spend the final four nights at Azura Benguerra. Built entirely by hand in partnership with the local community, the ultra-luxurious Azura Benguerra has just 20 spacious ’beach-chic’ designer villas, each with their own private pool stretching out to the Indian Ocean beyond, and located a few steps from the pristine white sand beach. When it comes to activities, you are spoilt for choice - snorkel or dive the magnificent reefs that are home to the turtles that nest nearby, try your hand at fishing, or sail on their dhow – a traditional Arabic sailing vessel common throughout the Indian Ocean.
Return by helicopter to Vilanculos and fly to Johannesburg to depart on your overnight flight to London Heathrow.
Morning arrival into London Heathrow.
