To celebrate the start of the BBC's five-part series - ‘Dynasties’ - presented by world renowned naturalist and broadcaster Sir David Attenborough later this month, Africa Travel presents you with the incredible destinations where you can catch a glimpse of four of the five magnificent animals the series will be focusing on – lions, wild dogs, chimpanzees and penguins.
Lions, Masai Mara, Kenya
Home to the Big Cat Diary, the grassy plains of the Masai Mara, baked golden by the African sun have always been a firm favourite for lion lovers. The ready supply of antelope, zebra, and wildebeest means a constant supply of food for the resident prides – especially during the months of July through to September/October, when the Great Migration arrives from the drier Serengeti Plains into the Mara in search of the green grass there
Wild dogs, Madikwe Game Reserve, South Africa
The African wild dog is the flagship specie of Madikwe, which is famous for its packs of the small, feisty predator. The reserve is only four hours from Johannesburg and is also malaria-free, which makes it great for families. It is also home to many other game species, including Africa’s famous Big 5.
Chimpanzees, Mahale Mountains National Park, Tanzania
The small and remote Mahale Mountains National Park is found in the very west of Tanzania and on the shoreline of Lake Tanganyika. The chimpanzee treks are the main drawcard here and seeing them in their natural habitat is a truly magical experience. When you are with the chimps you will be able to observe their very human-like behaviour as the younger ones play in the trees and the adults observe and squabble amongst themselves.
Penguins, Boulders Beach, South Africa
Cape Town definitely has no shortage of amazing beaches, but Boulders Beach in False Bay offers something extra special – a colony of African Penguins in all their smartly dresses, waddling glory, right under your nose. In fact, it’s the only place in the world where you can get close to African Penguins!
