Doro Nawas Camp

Overview

Located on a rocky outcrop in ruggedly beautiful Damaraland, Doro Nawas Camp is set on the floodplain of a small tributary of the Huab River. The unique lodge design allows for unspoilt panoramic views of this diverse and dramatic landscape through large glass windows or from the open roof-top terrace. Guided game drives are an excellent opportunity to appreciate the spectacular views and desert scenery.

Game viewing concentrates on the wildlife found in the riverbed and along the valleys that sometimes fill with water in the rainy season - if you are lucky, you may see the rare desert-adapted elephant or black rhino. Another highlight is an expedition to nearby Twyfelfontein, home to renowned San art engravings and the largest collection of petroglyphs - prehistoric rock art - in Africa. The combination of Africa's past and present makes for a fascinating visit.

Highlights

Our Thoughts

A great location at which to spend a few nights for those en-route from the coast to Etosha. The accommodation is in canvas and stone units and the desert elephant is the animal to bag here. The attractions of Twyfelfontein are nearby and the on-site Damara Living Museum is also worth a visit.

Perched on top of a small hill, the main camp's open-plan areas house the lounge with its big fireplace, a curio shop, small gallery and welcoming bar with large glass doors that fold away to give easy access to the extensive wooden deck and gorgeous views. A staircase leads to the roof where you can enjoy relaxing sundowner drinks and incredible stargazing while the swimming pool is tucked away between rocks and looks out over the dramatic landscape.

Tasty and wholesome buffet meals are served in Doro Nawas' main dining area or out on the main deck with nothing between you and miles of spectacular Damaraland scenery.

Accommodation at Doro Nawas Camp comprises 16 chalets which combine natural stone and canvas walls with wood and glass doors, all shaded by a thatch roof. The chalet's design and décor blend into the surrounding scenery and each one delivers comfort and luxury in the sometimes abrasive and arid semi-desert conditions. Each chalet has a large comfortable bed that can be wheeled out onto your veranda for a night of incredible stargazing. Rooms are en suite with a shower, 'his and hers' basins and a flush toilet; there is also an outdoor shower on your private veranda.
