An Interview with Brad Twaddle

It has become a well-known fact that the art scene in South Africa is exploding right now, becoming a hub for artists to display their finest work. In order to find out more about the thriving art movement in South Africa the renowned art expert, Brad Twaddle has taken the time to tell us more. With all his years of knowledge, experience and personal relationships he has created with many of the local artists, he takes pride in educating people about South African Art Culture as well as offer them an elite “artsy” experience when visiting the magnificent city. 

If we could only visit one gallery in South Africa, which one would you recommend and why? 

Everard Read Gallery. They are the oldest commercial art gallery in South Africa, presenting a great collection of local talents of modern and contemporary art. (Everard has galleries in Cape Town, Johannesburg as well as in London.)

Why is South Africa’s art scene thriving at the moment? 

There has been an increased amount of South African art galleries and artists being invited to participate in international art fairs. Thus offering further exposure for our local artists and gaining the interests and attention of foreign collectors and investors. Not to mention the amount of talent that comes onto the market each year, every time blowing us away while they push creative boundaries.

What is your favourite piece of South African art and why?  

If I could say, the Dylan Lewis Sculpture Garden in Stellenbosch. The garden alone which consists of over 70 sculptures is an artwork in its own form. The most picturesque setting along with its magnificent backdrops and ever-changing weather conditions, make this a  place I crave to visit time and time again.

Who is your current favourite South Africa artist and why?

After viewing her current body of work, I am intoxicated with Kirsten Simms. Her artworks are theatrical in their own right with strong narratives between the humorous characters in their placed settings.

Which South African artists should visitors be looking out for? 

Wow, there are so many to name, but a few artists I am closely following are:

• Richard Mudariki (painting)
• Adriaan Diedericks (sculpture, drawing)
• Justin Dingwall (photography)
• Nicholas Hlobo (sculpture, installation and canvas works)                                        
  

What are your top 5 places to view art in South Africa and why?

Zeitz MOCAA, Norval Foundation, Keyes Art Mile, Dylan Lewis Sculpture Garden & The Art at Delaire Graff Estate. All offer an eclectic experience of diverse talents.

How would you describe South African art to someone who knows nothing about it? 

We are all ambassadors for our country. Our South African artists all have a story to tell. As previously mentioned a lot of the artworks are deeply connected to the artist’s personal experiences, rich with symbolism and ambiguity. The artworks at first glance may not be recognisable but the viewer needs to spend time with it to unlock its incredible meaning and discover its thought-provoking message.
