Lying on Mombo Island just off the north-west tip of famous Chief's Island, Mombo Camp is situated in the Moremi Game Reserve and set under huge riverside trees. It's an area that prides itself on offering what is perhaps the best game viewing in Botswana, and you can spot an incredible variety of animals simply by relaxing on the camp's extensive viewing deck or the raised deck of your tented suite. Early morning and afternoon game drives with an expert guide will deliver even better sightings. This part of the Okavango Delta provides a rich habitat and animals such as lion, buffalo and elephant are commonly seen. Predators are exceptionally well represented here and rhino, recently reintroduced to the area, are occasionally spotted. The bird watching is sensational and Mombo Camp fully deserves its global reputation as a safari camp par excellence.
THE best and most famous safari lodge in Botswana. Boasting some of the best game viewing in all of Africa, the accommodation is split between the main lodge and Little Mombo camp, which has room for just six guests. Unless you strike lucky, book a stay here at least 12 months, if not 18 months in advance – giving you plenty of time to get excited and to start saving.
The extensive main area of Mombo Camp is raised on wooden decks with the lounge, library and bar all providing breathtaking views of lily-filled waterways and teeming floodplains. The wooden deck extends to provide many vantage points for viewing passing wildlife and incorporates the covered and uncovered dining areas and the camp’s fire pit. The peaceful pool area with various day beds is situated down one of the walkways and near the gym which probably has the best view of any gym in the world.
Food at Mombo Camp is both excellent and plentiful: with early morning breakfast, a large brunch, game drive snacks, afternoon tea and sundowner drinks making up the day's fare before dinner, you are unlikely to go hungry. Mombo has a 'kgotla' or open-air boma for traditional outdoor dining around a fire and under the stars, otherwise meals are taken on the raised deck overlooking the floodplains. Private dining can be arranged for a romantic evening for two as can daytime picnics where you will be surrounded by nothing but the Okavango Delta.
Mombo Camp’s nine luxurious tented suites are raised almost two metres off the ground and are connected by walkways. This not only allows animals to wander freely beneath the camp but also enhances the magnificent views of the Okavango Delta. Each incredibly spacious canvas tent boasts wooden floors and features a large mosquito net-draped bed, a dedicated lounge area and an en suite bathroom with his-and-hers showers and an additional outdoor shower for those who want to get even closer to nature. Each room extends onto its own veranda complete with private sala where you can relax and watch the Okavango Delta go by.
Children from the age of 12 are welcome at Mombo Camp. It’s known as the best place in Botswana to experience a safari, and taking your family here for their first one would be something none of you would quickly forget.
