Last month, it was announced that the Kit Mikayi rock in Kisumu County, Kenya has been listed as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o made the announcement on Jamhuri Day, a national holiday in Kenya. Nyong’o said “I am happy to announce that on Wednesday in the State of Columbia UNESCO declared Kit Mikayi a world cultural heritage site for the preservation of Luo culture. This re-affirms how culture is significant as the lifeblood of a vibrant society, expressed in the many ways we celebrate, remember the past and entertain ourselves.”
Kit Miyaki is a huge rock formation with three stones resting on top of each other. Its name is a Luo dialect meaning “The Stone Of The First Wife” as this is where the Luo people believe the first woman lived. The stone is a sacred place for locals to come to and pray whenever the village is troubled.
