Being invited to view a Relais & Chateaux property is a rare treat, so when the opportunity came to take a closer look at Cape Town’s iconic Ellerman House there was no hesitation in joining Joy for a morning to view the recently refurbished interior.

From the moment you step into Ellerman House there is a calmness that washes over you. You can tell straight away that you will be looked after in every way - whether you’re here to spend a few nights exploring the city or are returning for an extended stay. Even the swimming pool is watched over by an reclining bronze cheetah.

Art. There’s art everywhere at Ellerman House. Their private collection is simply incredible and includes a variety of South Africa’s artistic talents - from the originals to the contemporary artists, they’re all here. They’ve even gone as far as to have artists collaborate in the design of their state-of-the-art wine gallery that features a unique terroir wall, carbon fibre corkscrew shaped red wine maturation ‘rack’, which can hold an impressive 1.500 bottles, as well as a brandy maturation glass art piece. Everything’s been thoroughly thought through, designed and incorporated with a deep sense of meaning using natural elements (picture a hollowed granite boulder turned into a fireplace and you’ll get an idea of the lengths they’ve gone through).

With a few new fresh elements added to their classic decor and nuances of colour to emphasise the unique African style; Ellerman House remains one of Cape Town’s gems and a firm favourite for returning visitors to the city.
