Zambia is probably one of our favourite countries in Africa. Located in the southern half of the continent, it is one of Africa's wildest and unspoilt destinations, offering an authentic safari filled with unforgettable animal encounters and unique experiences. It is also home to the world famous Victoria Falls, one of the seven wonders of the natural world. To help you get the most out of your holiday to Zambia, we have prepared a list of our top things to see and do in this extraordinary country.
1. Try A Walking Safari
Zambia has become synonymous with walking safaris, especially South Luangwa National Park. It was the pioneering region for walking safaris, when former hunter Norman Carr (who created the group of lodges of the same name) wanted to take his visitors to see the animals in as natural a way as possible. The consequence of this is the area now boasts Africa's best trained guides for taking you on guided walks, meaning you get up close to a huge variety of animals which makes for a truly extraordinary experience.
2. White Water Rafting
The Zambezi River is one of the world’s top 10 whitewater spots and for good reason. Where else, can you brave the rapids beneath thundering Victoria Falls, with epic Africa as a backdrop?
3. Victoria Falls
No trip to Zambia is complete without experiencing the majesty of the Victoria Falls. The Mosi-oa-Tunya is one of the seven wonders of the natural world and is a truly remarkable sight to behold. They are a fabulous playground for thrill seekers, as well as lovers of beauty, tranquillity and relaxing pursuits. For the very brave, we recommend visiting the falls from September to January to enjoy Devil’s Pool, a rock pool that has formed on the very edge of the falls. It’s a truly exhilarating experience that will be etched in your memory forever.
4. See The Kasanka Bat Migration
Between October and December each year, around 10 million straw coloured fruit bats descend into a tiny patch of evergreen swamp forest inside Kasanka National Park, Northern Zambia. This natural phenomenon, unique only to Kasanka is one of the world’s best kept secrets and lends itself to some truly astonishing birdlife sightings set against a backdrop of incredible scenic surrounds and dramatic skies.
5. Enjoy A Sunset Cruise Along The Zambezi
A sunset cruise on the Zambezi has been described as one of the most romantic experiences in the world. They are a fine way to enjoy the beautiful vegetation lining the Zambezi as well as limited game viewing and lots of birding. There are a variety of boats available from small private boats to large party boats.
6. Experience The World’s Second Largest Wildebeest Migration
The Liuwa Plains wildebeest migration in Zambia is one of Africa’s great natural phenomena. It’s second in enormity only to the Masai Mara–Serengeti trek, and yet it’s hardly known. Each year, 45,000 wildebeest seek fresh grazing in the remote, sublime Liuwa Plains. Viewing these vast herds on the move during a Zambia safari is an unforgettable sight.
7. Explore Kafue National Park’s Untamed Wilderness
At 5.5 million acres, Kafue is one of the largest National Parks in Africa. For safari purists, it is a dream come true, with very few lodges in a huge area and outstanding game viewing with some very rare sightings not seen in many other parts of Africa. Some camps also offer the chance to go ballooning over the reserve, a truly unique experience that gives a totally new perspective to the areas you have been traversing by vehicle.
8. Afternoon Tea At The Royal Livingstone
Sometimes when travelling you just have to treat yourself to a bit of luxury, and high tea at the Royal Livingstone Hotel is just that. The Royal Livingstone is a 5 star hotel on the banks of the Zambezi River just before Victoria Falls. High tea is served at 3pm every day, and includes all you can eat cakes, pastries, savouries and teas for 2 hours, and at a cost of only $20 it's extremely good value for money
