For many, an African safari is the trip of a lifetime, something never to be repeated, and so it is essential to get the absolute most out of any such holiday and to ensure that every element is spot on. At Africa Travel we have been sending clients on safari for decades and we know exactly what needs to be done in order for a wildlife holiday to be a success. Follow this simple seven-point plan, and your long dreamt safari will undoubtedly live up to its star billing.
Utilise Us
There are a myriad of safari areas to choose from in a wide range of locations, but how to know which one is best for you and your interests & budget? We have years of experience and knowledge for you to draw on, so the simplest advice is just to get in touch with us. As the saying goes, knowledge is power.
Pack Properly
Many make the mistake of taking too much on safari and with light aircraft transfers often limiting the amount of luggage you can travel with, Africa Travel have fine-tuned our recommended kit list to ensure that you have everything you need, and nothing more.
Rise Early
Animals tend to be active early morning and late evening so be prepared for an early start – a quick tea or coffee and off into the bush before sunrise will be rewarded wonderfully with great game viewing, a majestic sunrise and a welcoming brunch back at base. Early to bed, early to rise is most definitely the safari way.
Pay Attention
To get the very best out of your safari, listen to your guide and follow the rules. They know the bush and they know how animals behave, and it is their job to make sure that you remain safe at all times. Keeping still and quiet when asked often results in some of the best up-close wildlife experiences possible.
Ask Questions
Your guide is a highly qualified professional, passionate about their subject and environment, and only too keen to share their knowledge with you – so don’t be afraid to ask them anything. Engaging with your guide will invariably unlock a flood of facts and stories of their time amongst the wildlife of Africa, undoubtedly enhancing your own experience at the same time.
Shoot Freely
Don’t forget to bring your camera, and don’t be shy about taking pictures whenever you can as you may never get the same chance again. You might end up taking 100 pictures of that majestic cheetah, but you can always delete the majority later if you wish; however always try to remember to look up from the lens occasionally and to live in the moment.
Don't Obsess
Every single game drive is different - some days you see everything, some days you see nothing. Try to remain open minded and enjoy the thrill of being in the wilds of Africa without stressing about what you have or haven’t seen or experienced. Embrace the environment and just go with the safari flow.
