This 16-night itinerary takes you into the heart of South Africa and KwaZulu Natal, self-driving through some of the most spectacular and breath-taking wonders of this beautiful region. The drives are easy, the accommodation so welcoming and activities range from historical tours of the famous battlefields of Rorke’s Drift to exciting game drives in an incredible, game-rich private reserve, not to forget the wide variety of opportunities that await you in the seaside resort town of Umhlanga Rocks.
Accommodation includes: Hartford House, Fugitives Drift Lodge, &Beyond Phinda Moutain Lodge and The Oyster Box
Depart London Heathrow on your scheduled overnight flight to Johannesurg
Connect with your onward flight to Durban, and on arrival collect your hire car and take a scenic drive through to KwaZulu Natal and to Hartford House where you spend the next three nights. This drive should take approximately four and a half hours but is easy driving and you should arrive at Hartford House in time for one of their fantastic lunches.
This is the perfect base from which to explore the beautifully scenic Midlands, with its array of craft shops, stunning scenery and wide range of activities on offer. The Midlands Meander is a famous route through the area and will allow you to see many of its highlights.
After a leisurely breakfast this morning, continue onwards to Fugitives Drift Lodge in the heart of Zululand. The drive should take around two and a half hours through some stunning scenery. You stay here for the next three nights and, in addition to the battlefield tours of Isandlwana and Rorke's Drift, there is a wide range of activities for you to enjoy. The lodge has its own small game reserve, a range of walking trails to historic sites and the option for longer day trips into the surrounding area.
Today you drive through the Phinda Game Reserve, towards the Northern part of the province. The drive takes five hours so ensure you leave in good time to arrive for afternoon tea (there are some nice lunch stops along the way) at &Beyond Phinda Mountain Lodge where you spend the next four nights. Twice daily game drives are included in the cost of your stay, as well as all meals and drinks.
The beauty of Phinda as a reserve is two-fold. Firstly, it has 7 different biomes with the reserve, meaning a wonderful variety of scenery and vegetation, making for fantastic game viewing throughout the reserve. Secondly, there are many extra activities you can enjoy other than the traditional game drives. They run an excellent Rhino notching programme and can organise scenic flights along the coast trips to see turtle hatching (in season).
The final drive of your trip takes you down the coast to Umhlanga Rocks on the outskirts of Durban (about three and a half hours) where you spend four nights at The Oyster Box. It is a beautiful hotel, with plenty of outdoor space to relax in and will be a wonderful place to unwind after a busy time exploring.
Just outside of Durban is the seaside resort town of Umhlanga Rocks. The tropical weather and lush vegetation make this an enticing holiday destination, attracting visitors from all over the world. It is the perfect location for ocean enthusiasts and outdoor adventurers alike, with great opportunities for diving, swimming, scuba diving, whale watching, dolphin viewing, deep sea fishing and kite boarding. Umhlanga Rocks also offers some excellent golf courses for the avid golfer.
Early this morning depart for Durban airport for your scheduled daylight flight on British Airways to London Heathrow, arriving this evening.
