Things to do in Malawi

Malawi is a landlocked country in Southeastern Africa, famous for its welcoming hospitality. 1. Majete Wildlife Reserve

The national parks and lush green land in Malawi are some of the most visited places in the country, particularly Majete Wildlife Reserve. It has seen a huge resurgence the past few decades, and increased tourism has brought funds for local communities and wildlife protection. As the reserve has gained popularity, more animals have been introduced such as lions, which were reintroduced in August 2012. Profits from tourism has gone towards malaria research and prevention, as well as supporting beekeeping projects. Majete Wildlife Reserve boasts stunning vistas and animals, and your visit could do wonders for local communities and wildlife.

2. Liwonde National Park

This park is home to an abundance of wildlife including black rhinoceros, hippos, elephants, impala and monkeys, to name just a few. Run by nonprofits, the park is home to an abundance of wildlife, as well as breathtaking landscapes of lush forests and lakes. Just south of Lake Malawi, this park is particularly special because of its African Bat Conservation, started in 2003, which is doing wonders for the native bat population.

3. Mkulumadzi Lodge 

Out of all the lodges in Malawi, the luxurious Mkulumadzi Lodge offers great value for money. It is tucked away in a secluded location, where you will arrive via a footbridge to one of the eight chalets. There are indoor and outdoor eating areas to feast on freshly cooked cuisine, next to the open camp fire and under the night sky. 4. Kuthengo Camp

At Kuthengo Camp, you will wake up in your own modern safari tent to the beautiful views of Liwonde National Park. The tents are nestled by the side of the Shire River amongst the fever trees. Each is ensuite and equipped with air conditioning, to make your stay both comfortable and enjoyable. Kuthengo means ‘wildlife’ in the local language, and you can expect to see plenty on your doorstep, or on guided safaris and river cruises to explore the local area. There are four tents at this camp with a maximum of 10 guests, making this an exclusive and peaceful accommodation. Each tent has its own private deck that looks out towards the river and the plain, where you can relax and watch the beautiful African sunset.

5. Likoma Island

One of the most exceptional places in Malawi is Likoma Island, which can be found on Lake Malawi. This is the larger of the two inhabited islands found on the lake, and is its own island oasis, surrounded by shallow blue waters. The natural environment here has been well preserved, and you can find rocky slopes and sandy bays perfect for snorkeling and diving. With few cars, this island is a peaceful escape from mainland life, where you can relax and unwind. It is also home to St Peter’s Cathedral, one of the largest churches in Africa. This majestic structure and its gardens have a tranquil atmosphere, and are definitely worth a visit when stopping on the island.
