Discover the idyllic Ibo Island

When you step off your dhow, you will be taken back in time when you see the wide streets, moss covered buildings and ageing ruins of ancient villas. With a population of just 3000, this small paradise feels like a world away from the mainland. 

The remote island of Ibo rests in the Indian Ocean just off the coast of Northern Mozambique. In the past it was colonised by the Portuguese, and you can still find remnants of Portuguese occupation here. 

In the north of the island you will find the old Portuguese fort of São João Baptista, built in 1791. Here you can discover the island’s colonial history, and find out more at the museum. Today, Ibo island is famed for its silversmiths and is renowned for its Swahili artisanship, which you can buy at stalls near the fort.

The island is part of Quirimbas National Park, where you can find exquisite wildlife and a whole range of terrains throughout the 68 miles of wilderness. In 2002, this region became a national park to protect the area and everything within it. You can roam through the coastal forests and mangroves, or swim amongst one of Africa’s richest coral reefs. The park is home to many animals, from elephants, lions and leopards to crocodiles, as well as 375 species of fish for you to marvel at. Pipefish and seahorses have been identified as threatened species, so are a rarity for anyone to see.
