There’s a host of enthralling things to do when visiting Mozambique, from trips over to the beautiful Tofo beach, to ocean safaris and adventures to the remote and historical Ibo Island. To the south in Maputo you can find sub-tropical islands hemmed with white sands and sparkling turquoise waters. Much of the wilderness remains vast and untouched, making it an alluring destination for many travellers.
Island hop by speedboat
There are countless magical islands on Mozambique holidays, all of which can be experienced by hopping on a speedboat and embarking on an exploration. Island hopping allows you to experience Mozambique from a different perspective; not only can you enjoy the diverse islands and what they have to offer, but you have the memorable experience of sitting back in the sunshine, admiring beautiful surroundings and scenery, while skimming the ocean waters.
The best part of island hopping by speedboat is the varied wildlife and sea life you get to witness both ashore and swimming in and out of the ocean waters.
Experience sightings of dolphins as they dip in and out of the ocean while sat on your speedboat, then swim by them on a snorkelling adventure after arriving at one of many beautiful islands here. If you’re lucky, you may even get to experience a sighting of a dugong - an impressive marine mammal that is medium in size and naturally grazes the ocean’s sea grasses, typically found swimming in shallow waters.
Embark on an exclusive ocean safari
Discover whales, sharks, dolphins and turtles on a breathtaking ocean safari from White Pearl Resort. The typical ocean safari lasts up to two hours, filled with adventure and magical opportunities that arise while swimming with some of Africa’s finest sea life. During your ocean safari, you will be accompanied by an on-board Research Assistant who is there to educate you on every animal you can witness on your Mozambique holiday.
If your trip is during the right season you might even be able to glimpse the majestic Humpback Whale surfacing off the coast, among many other wonderful creatures. Ocean safaris work hand in hand with marine conservation workers and the Marine Megafauna Foundation, so you can be assured your trip will be environmentally friendly, and will help all the animals you see.
An ocean safari trip will be done at a relaxed and leisurely pace, and the boat will zig zag between two prime points while on the lookout for wildlife. While snorkelling in the open ocean, you can get up close and personal with the incredible creatures of Mozambique. All equipment is included in the price, and this kind of trip is perfect great for people with no diving experience, as no special training is required.
Discover the idyllic Ibo Island
When you step off your dhow, you will be taken back in time when you see the wide streets, moss covered buildings and ageing ruins of ancient villas. With a population of just 3000, this small paradise feels like a world away from the mainland.
The remote island of Ibo rests in the Indian Ocean just off the coast of Northern Mozambique. In the past it was colonised by the Portuguese, and you can still find remnants of Portuguese occupation here.
In the north of the island you will find the old Portuguese fort of São João Baptista, built in 1791. Here you can discover the island’s colonial history, and find out more at the museum. Today, Ibo island is famed for its silversmiths and is renowned for its Swahili artisanship, which you can buy at stalls near the fort.
The island is part of Quirimbas National Park, where you can find exquisite wildlife and a whole range of terrains throughout the 68 miles of wilderness. In 2002, this region became a national park to protect the area and everything within it. You can roam through the coastal forests and mangroves, or swim amongst one of Africa’s richest coral reefs. The park is home to many animals, from elephants, lions and leopards to crocodiles, as well as 375 species of fish for you to marvel at. Pipefish and seahorses have been identified as threatened species, so are a rarity for anyone to see.
The best accommodation option is Ibo Island Lodge who also offer adventurous mobile dhow safaris where you explore the coastline and islands by traditional dhow boat and camp out overnight in tents.
