Safaris in the heart of Africa are on the bucket list of thousands of people all around the world. However, what many people don’t realise is just how much variety you can enjoy when on an African safari.
While it’s the perfect way of spotting the Big Five in their natural habitat, a true safari experience offers so much more than this. Here are the top five must-do safaris, all of which can be experienced when booking with Africa Travel.
1. Mokoro Canoe Trip, Botswana
The Okavango Delta, located in Botswana, is the ideal place to not only spot the Big Five, but also discover the true beauty of nature in Africa. Seeing the Delta by mokoro canoe is a time-honoured tradition which proves immensely popular with visitors from all over the world.
The mokoro, a traditional canoe, is able to hold up to two passengers and the pilot, who stands at the rear of the vessel and uses a long pole to push it forward. This mode of transport is an eco-friendly way of experiencing the sights and sounds of Africa, without disturbing the animals in their natural habitat. This means you get an even better glimpse of the local wildlife.
Various camps can be found in and around the Delta, including Mombo Camp and Kanana Camp.
2. Wildebeest Migration, Serengeti/Masai Mara
For many, the Great Migration of wildebeest is the highlight of their safari. The Serengeti in Tanzania, or Kenya’s Masai Mara are the ideal places to spot the wildebeest sweeping across the plains.

The National Park is becoming more and more popular as its reputation for being the best place for spotting big game continues to grow. At the same time, you are also escorted by armed scouts, ensuring your guide can concentrate on giving you the best experience while you are completely safe.
4. Gorilla trekking in Rwanda/Uganda
Gorilla trekking is one of the most incredible experiences you could have during a safari holiday in Africa. Rwanda and Uganda are the ideal locations to go for gorilla trekking; the Parc National des Volcans is Rwanda’s go-to place for visitors who wish to see these magnificent creatures. With a limited number of permits to see the gorillas, you will need to book in advance to avoid disappointment.
Meanwhile, Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable National Park protects more than half of the world’s mountain gorillas, giving you the opportunity for an unforgettable, up close encounter. Aside from gorillas, elsewhere in Uganda’s national parks visitors can view the rarely seen golden monkeys, chimpanzees and members of the Big Five.
5. Tracking black rhino on foot in Namibia
Namibia’s Desert Rhino Camp, situated in the Damaraland region, is home to the largest population of free-roaming black rhino to be found anywhere in Africa. The rugged plains in the Palmwag concession, an area in the Damaraland region, is the perfect place to track these spectacular creatures, on foot.
The camp itself has just eight tents, meaning the setting is very intimate, giving you the chance to bond with your fellow guests. On the site, there is an open sided lounge and plunge pool, which allows you to cool off after a hot day of trekking.
The Desert Rhino Camp also runs in conjunction with the Save the Rhino Trust, meaning your fantastic safari experience actually contributes to saving these endangered animals from extinction.
