When you first set eyes on the ochre walls of Phinda Rock Lodge clinging to the cliff face you’ll need a second look to realise you haven’t arrived at a Mexican hacienda. While the rugged adobe-style building wouldn’t be out of place in a desert pueblo, the lush bushveld vegetation and the wildlife dotted on the surrounding slopes leave you in no doubt that you’re in the middle of Africa.
With only six suites carved into the rocky hillside, you’ll feel you’re part of an elite tribe of rock dwellers suspended in a cosy hideout that offers complete seclusion from the world below.
Elevated over the valley below, the cliff-top suites provide an intimate, cosy space in a dramatic setting with an eagle’s eye view of the reserve. Snuggled high above the surrounding panorama, your closest neighbour is likely to be an inquisitive spotted genet paying you a friendly visit on the dining deck.
Accommodation is in charming suites, stunningly constructed in the style of mini-castles. If the mere mortal want to really holiday like a king or queen, then combine a stay here with one of the private castles at the Conrad Pezula.
The guest dining and sitting areas have imposing fireplaces and open out onto a shaded deck with sweeping views of the Lebombo Mountains and bushveld below and beyond. The perfect location to enjoy a peaceful and taste bud tingling meal.
Six exceptional suites perched on the side of a rocky cliff. Each suite has a spacious bedroom with bath, shower, his and her basins and separate WC. All suites have their own private sitting area, personal bar and deck offering unrivalled views of spectacular Leopard Rock and the valley below. The highlight of each suite though has to be the personal plunge pool. Carved out of the natural rock it sits on the edge of the cliff, giving you the sense you are floating in mid air. So as the sun goes down and you are floating around with a glass of South African wine, you’ll think – life can’t get much better.
Regretfully, for safety reasons due to the cliffside location, children cannot be accommodated.
