While the peak time for game viewing in Botswana is the southern hemisphere winter between July and September a safari in the rainy, or green, season should not be discounted. This is actually the best time to visit the Central Kalahari and Nxai Pan areas and the rains bring colour to the landscape, dramatic thunderstorms, migratory birds and lots of young animals.
Accommodation includes: Tau Pan, Nxai Pan Camp and Kwara Camp
Overnight flight from Heathrow to Johannesburg on British Airways.
Morning arrival and connecting flight to Maun. You will then fly by light aircraft to the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, a vast park that really comes into its own during the rains. The huge grass plains become lush and green and see concentrations of large herds of antelopes, closely followed by predators. Thunderstorms make for some fantastic skyscapes. You will stay for three nights at Tau Pan, a remote and eco-friendly camp with expansive views. Head out into the reserve on game drives with a guide and tracker and don’t miss the chance to take a nature walk with Bushman trackers.
Fly by light aircraft to Nxai Pan Camp for a two night stay. Like the Central Kalahari, Nxai Pan is at its best in the green season and the camp is environmentally friendly with specially designed rooms that remain cool in the summer heat. Trips to see Baines’ Baobabs and fascinating walks with Bushman trackers complement the game drives and animal viewing at the camp’s waterhole.
Fly to the Okavango Delta for a three night stay at Kwara Camp. Strange as it may seem, the delta floods in the dry season rather than the rainy season but at Kwara you have access to the permanent waterways of the delta so mokoro canoe trips and motorboat trips, those quintessential Okavango experiences, can still be enjoyed during the green season. The vast private concession that Kwara occupies also has expansive areas of dry land for game viewing by vehicle among the lush landscape, greened by the rains.
Fly to Maun for the afternoon flight to Johannesburg and overnight flight on British Airways to Heathrow.
