Most of us fondly remember going on holiday with the family as a child. Long drives, car snacks and squabbling with siblings. Family getaways are the best way to make memories that will last a lifetime and what better way to make these memories than on safari?
Ants Nest and Ants Hill bush homes pride themselves on providing a safari experience that can be enjoyed by the whole family! Children of all ages are always welcome and both bush homes offer a broad variety of activities to suit all interests and abilities.
Horse riding safaris are (of course) the most popular option. But don’t worry if you’ve never been on a horse before! The team at Ants consist of highly skilled and experienced guides who will help you find your saddle legs! Pony walks and one-on-one lessons in the schooling arena ensure budding young riders gain enough confidence to ride out in the open savannah, creating memorable encounters with a diverse selection of wildlife. If you’re already a competent rider, there are over 40 horses at each lodge to choose from so you will certainly enjoy finding your favourite.
If the sun starts to get too hot the horses have also come up with a wonderful way to help keep everyone cool…swimming in the local dams! Fortunately the horses are patient enough to give you time to slip into your bathing suits first before they delve into the refreshing waters for a dip.
To occupy energetic travellers, there is also the option of day and night game drives, including an optional visit to the Sable Antelope breeding project. Nature walks and bush survival are also great ways to keep enquiring minds and youngsters entertained as they are tasked with navigating to sundowners or back to the parked game viewer, exploring new ways of finding water and tips or tricks for finding food and avoiding dangerous encounters with wild beasties.
If you’re keener on the little things then guests can join one of the guides for a tracks and signs walk – learning all about the different footprints found around the reserve. In summer there is also the opportunity to do ‘bug walks’ following dung beetles as they make their way from dung heap to dung heap, typically rolling a ball in reverse and seemingly always knowing where they are going.
The latest edition to the activities list is a sensationally slithery snake show – whereby all guests are able to interact with some of Southern Africa’s most sophisticated evolved specimens from those with hundreds of teeth and no venom to ‘huffy puffy’ little characters. Ant’s resident snake enthusiast will guide you through each of the snakes that he handles, showing you their individual interesting adaptations and dispelling some behavioural myths and providing a fascinating insight into the secret life of snakes.
