Mont Rochelle has long been regarded as one of the best places to stay in Franschhoek, so, it was with considerable fanfare that the property was purchased and refurbished by Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Limited Edition brand in the summer of 2014. The property re-opened in September 2014, with it's original character and integrity in place, but with the beautiful touches that are synonymous with the Virgin collection.
Each of the 22 rooms are beautifully appointed, commanding wonderful views out across the gardens and to the surrounding mountains and vineyards. All rooms now include complimentary mini-bars, which is a lovely touch. The main building also houses their fine dining restaurant, spa and heated outdoor swimming pool. The gardens are a beautiful place to relax and enjoy the views across the Franschhoek Valley, whilst the remote location provides the property with a peaceful atmosphere.
Mont Rochelle is in an ideal location to visit some of the more popular attractions in South Africa, with Cape Town being just under an hour's drive away and the Stellenbosch, Paarl and Somerset West wine routes only a 35 minute drive away. Another great way to spend a day whilst staying at Mont Rochelle is to visit the Ullusaba Game Reserve in the Sabi Sand Reserve.
With another country kitchen style restaurant and winery on offer, guests are spoilt for choice on what to do when here, although picnics in the grounds are always popular as you will have a well-stocked picnic basket and bottles of wine prepared for you before you sit amongst the 100 acres of ground. The iconic Franschhoek wine tram passes close by and there is the chance to tour the wineries on horseback which is a wonderful experience.
Being situated in the heart of the Franschoek vineyards, it would be a shame not to take advantage of the later months in the year when autumn colours decorate the region but the warm weather remains in the day, although night time temperatures tend to drop. This is also the time of year when the wine region starts to celebrate a number of local festivals. The summer is also a fantastic time to visit Franschoek, where the weather evokes feelings of being in the Mediterranean. Franschoek is in fact often compared to the South of France by visitors.
The refurbishment in the summer of 2014 has firmly re-established Mont Rochelle as one of Franschhoek's premier properties. With just 22 rooms it retains a small feel, but has the facilities and service of a much larger property. The heated outdoor swimming pool is very welcoming and the spa is fantastic. There is so much to see and do on the property and we would highly recommend visits to their superb winery and picnics on the grounds.
Mont Rochelle is a wonderful gourmet retreat, with their main fine dining restaurant located in the main building and a further, country kitchen style restaurant located at the winery. They also offer picnics which can be taken out and enjoyed in the grounds and regular wine tastings are offered to guests.
Mont Rochelle has 16 rooms and 6 suites, which are spread throughout the main house. All rooms are spacious, comfortable, well appointed and come with complimentary minibars. The suites are a really great option if you have a slightly longer stay, especially the Cap Classique Suite with its own swimming pool.
Mont Rochelle welcomes families with children of all ages.
