South Africa is a plant-lover’s paradise, with colourful displays of wildflowers all along the west coast bursting into bloom each year. Go green on this carefully-curated itinerary which includes the Cape Floral Kingdom’s very best displays of flora and fauna - from the magnificent carpets of wildflowers found in the West Coast National Park & Namaqualand, to the manicured and historic gardens of Cape Town and the unique fynbos found in the Grootbos Private Nature Reserve.
Accommodation includes: Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve and Wellness Retreat, Farmhouse Hotel, Belmond Mount Nelson, and Grootbos Private Nature Reserve
Overnight flight from London Heathrow to Cape Town.
On arrival collect your hire car and drive north to stay for three nights at Bushmans Kloof. In the foothills of the Cederberg Mountains this award-winning property is showcase to two of South Africa’s true treasures. As it is within the Cape Floral Kingdom, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is covered with numerous species of indigenous fynbos, while it also has access to 130 sites of ancient Bushmen rock art. Guests are accommodated in luxurious en-suite rooms with private terraces and wonderful views, and in addition to the four swimming pools, sauna and spa, the activities on offer range from sedentary croquet, fly-fishing & archery to thrilling mountain biking & canoeing.
Drive onward to stay for two nights at the Farmhouse Hotel. Overlooking the tranquil Langebaan lagoon this hotel is within walking distance of two beaches, and it offers guests an authentic coastal farmstead experience. The well-appointed rooms are complemented by facilities which include a swimming pool, garden, gym, snooker room, lounge and in-house museum. The heartbeat of the hotel are the Panorama Restaurant and the charming Legends Bar, but the main attractions are to be found in the adjacent Wild Coast National Park, which is home to a famed annual display of wildflowers.
Continue south to Cape Town for a three night stay at the Belmond Mount Nelson, the best-known of all the city’s hotels. Originally built to house passengers from the Union Castle cruise liners, the British and Colonial heritage of the hotel shines through in the grand public rooms and classic, period furnished guest rooms. The hotel sprawls over several buildings within seven acres of beautiful rose gardens and manicured lawns, creating a peaceful oasis in the heart of Cape Town. From the colonial grandeur of the Planet bar and restaurant, to the al fresco informality of the pool area, the facilities at the hotel are superb, with two heated swimming pools and a spa.
The final destination on this floral extravaganza is arguably the best – a two night stay at the Grootbos Private Nature Reserve. Overlooking Walker Bay, this hillside reserve allows guests to experience the Cape's floral kingdom and fascinating bird, mammal and marine life. The luxury en-suite cottages have large living rooms, spacious wooden decks and fabulous ocean views, and there is a wide range of nature-orientated activities available, from nature drives and trails through fynbos and forests, to horse-riding along the beach and boat trips to view the nearby seal colony. Boat excursions are also offered for guests to cage-dive amongst the Great White Sharks or to get close to the Southern Right Whales.
Return your hire car at Cape Town airport before your overnight flight to London Heathrow.
