Africa; the most romantic continent in the world. The ultimate honeymoon or special wedding anniversary destination.
Here at Africa Travel, we have chosen six of our favourite safari lodges, all of which have that extra something to make your romantic stay truly special.
Londolozi Private Granite Suites, South Africa
Voted one of the top hotels by Conde Naste Traveler’s 2014 Reader’s Choice Awards, the ultra-luxurious Londolozi Private Granite Suites has Relais Chateau status and is one of the most exclusive lodges in Africa with only three suites. Each has its own private deck and plunge pool with expansive views of the wilderness. Honeymooners staying at Londolozi are treated to private game drives, picnic dinners and champagne sundowners at sunset. The property can be booked individually or as a private camp for six guests, making it ideal for honeymooning couples or small groups celebrating special occasions. The ultimate romantic safari destination.
Nkwichi Lodge, Mozambique
Only reachable by boat, this Nkwichi Lodge is the perfect hideaway for weary travellers, set right on the shores of Lake Malawi. With only six luxury chalets and two private houses, chances are you won’t see the other guests unless you really try to. Rooms are hidden amongst the trees providing ultimate privacy, and they all come with their own private cove, verandah and outdoor bath (in some instances carved out of the rock). Take a trip on a dhow for sundowners before lazily making your way to a private dinner overlooking the lake. For the ultimate romantic experience why not spend the night under the stars on an outside bed.
Jack’s Camp, Botswana
This place honestly looks like something out of an Indiana Jones film. Persian carpets, Moroccan style tents and traditional colonial era safari touches make for an incredible sight. Located in the eerily beautiful Makgadikgadi Pans, where the horizon is endless, there is a surprisingly wide range of things to do during a stay at Jack's Camp – however visiting Chapman’s Baobab has to be top of the list, it’s one of the oldest and biggest trees in Africa. Request sundowners out on the pans for a sunset like you’ve never seen before.
Elsa’s Kopje, Kenya
Nestled into the hillside and overlooking the vast plains of the rugged and remote Meru National Park, Elsa’s Kopje is one of the most famous lodges in Africa and a real romantic hideaway. Couples in love can stay in the wonderfully secluded honeymoon suite, which features a private sitting room, main bedroom, en-suite bathroom, romantic outside baths and a small private deck with spectacular views over the park. Guests eat on their own individual tables and dinner is almost always taken outside with candlelit tables laid out under the stars.
Tongabezi, Zambia
Location! Location! Location! Situated on top of the Victoria Falls, Tongabezi was designed for romance. Each of the five houses or four cottages overlooks the river, and this view can be admired from the comfort of your outdoor bath! Take advantage of the private dining option – a dining platform moored in the middle of the mighty Zambezi River, for ultimate privacy. The staff will really go out of their way for special occasions and will take such good care of you, it will be extremely difficult to leave. A truly magical romantic hideaway.
Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti, Tanzania
Surrounded by the breathtaking beauty and magnificent wildlife of the Serengeti, the ultra-luxurious Four Seasons Safari Lodge makes the perfect romantic getaway with its private pool suites, couple's massages and private game drives. Honeymooners or those celebrating a special anniversary can also enjoy walking safari accompanied by your very own Maasai Guide with sundowners under the savannah sky, early morning hot-air balloon safaris over the Serengeti followed by champagne bush breakfasts or romantic four-course dinners served by your own private waiter under the stars.
