With a multitude of national parks and pristine game reserves, Botswana is, without a doubt, one of the best safari destinations in the world. Often thought to be Africa’s best-kept secret, the country offers visitors a raw, authentic and exclusive safari experience in open camps, where wildlife wanders into the site throughout the day and night. Due to the large size of the reserves and the country’s strict limited visitor policy, you are highly unlikely to come into contact with large numbers of people while you’re out searching for game unlike in other safari destinations. Here’s just a taste of what you can expect from a safari in this incredibly diverse country.
The Landscapes
Botswana is a land of contrasts from the vast Kalahari Desert and salt pans of the Makgadikgadi to the rich oasis of the Okavango Delta. The Delta is a pristine paradise of channels, lagoons and islands teeming with big game, rare species and dazzling birdlife. In stark contrast, the Kalahari and the Makgadikgadi salt pans offer magnificent solitude, surreal lunar landscapes, desert-adapted wildlife and the opportunity to spend time with the San people - ‘the Bushmen of the Kalahari’. Here you can witness the little-known migration of wildebeest and Zebra’s, and quad bike across the endless pans & get up close and personal with meerkats. Further to the north, enormous herds of elephant can be found in the Chobe National Park and the Moremi. The Linyanti Reserve abound with predators such as lions, leopards and cheetahs.
The Wildlife
Botswana Safaris are famous for offering some of the most unique and unrivalled wildlife viewings in the world. You can expect to see the Big Five and more on a safari here. For great predator sightings particularly wild dogs, lions and leopards head to the Moremi or Linyanti Game Reserves. If you are more interested in spotting large herds of elephants, then a visit to Chobe National Park in the North of a country is a must. As well as incredible game sightings, Botswana is also a paradise for twitchers with around 600 bird species, including over 500 regularly occurring species to discover.
The Activities
If you are looking to do more than just the bog standard morning and afternoon game drives on safari, Botswana is definitely the destination for you. One of the best ways to experience Botswana is by water, a trip on a mokoro For the thrill seekers in your party, there are opportunities to go on quad biking safaris in the Makgadikgadi Pans. Also, because many of the camps and lodges are situated on private concessions, guests are able to participate in and experience more.
The Accommodation
Due to its government’s high-value, low-volume tourism policy accommodation in Botswana is not cheap, with the country boasting some of the most luxurious camps and lodges in Africa. Many of the camps and lodges are in areas which are only accessible by light aircraft and they’re generally situated on private concessions, which means guests are able to participate in a wider range of activities including night game drives, nature walks and boating excursions. Despite their remoteness, you can have every creature comfort imaginable on safari in Botswana including fine food and spa treatments. Some of our favourite camps and lodges include Abu Camp, Sanctuary Chief’s Camp and Jack’s Camp.
