Kanana is a hidden jewel set on the Xudum River in the southwest of the Okavango Delta. At Kanana Camp guests are accommodated in 8 spacious, twin-bedded Meru-style tents, set on raised teak decks, offering breathtaking views across the waterways.
A five-star safari lodge which, as well as game drives and bush walks, also boasts two special activities. The first is a sleep out deck where you can spend an unforgettable night out under the stars and the second is the camp’s very own heronry, where many migratory birds come to nest.
Kanana Camp has its own air-strip very close to camp making transfers much easier. There is a lovely bar and welcoming dining area where you can eat some deliciously freshly prepared meals. There is also a plunge pool which is always enticing as a way to cool down in between safaris. The camp also has a well stocked curio shop.
Kanana’s main lounge and dining area is an interesting and very open design, raised on decks around an impressive ancient strangler fig tree; we noticed orchids growing on the tree, and a variety of small birds hopping and scrabbling along the branches and base.
This open-sided structure is essentially split into three sections, including two comfortable seating areas with sofas and a selection of coffee-table books. One of these incorporates the bar area, where guests are invited to help themselves from a sideboard containing a selection of spirits and wines, and a wooden cupboard housing a large fridge. Then there is the dining area with a long dining table – where everybody normally eats together – as well as a tea- and coffee-making station.
Accommodation is in just eight luxury-style tents, so only a maximum of 16 guests in camp at any one time. Along with the communal facilities of the camp, the tents are built on platforms on stilts to ensure a good view of the floodplains for all visitors.
The activities on offer are game viewing based. Guests can choose from game drives, including night drives to spot the nocturnal species, bush walks, boating, mokoro (canoes), and fishing. The variety of game viewing options means that each day will be different and you will hopefully see a wide range of game.
No real children facilities, but welcomed from the age of 10 years ( Jul-Oct) and 7 years ( Mar-Jun). There is a family tent with an en-suite bathrooms with shower, hot and cold running water and flush toilet.
