Take the kids on a holiday none of you will ever forget – to the wonderfully family-friendly destination that is South Africa. The many sights of Cape Town, one of the world’s most action-packed cities will keep everyone busy before the great outdoors and activities of the Grootbos Private Nature Reserve lie in wait. Next up is the Garden Route, home to beaches, forests, lagoons and a multitude of attractions, including elephant parks and monkey & bird sanctuaries, before you finish in style on safari, in search of the Big Five in the malaria-free Eastern Cape.
Accommodation includes: Table Bay Hotel, Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, Hunter's Country House, and Hlosi Game Lodge.
Depart London on the direct overnight flight to Cape Town.
On arrival collect hire car and drive to stay for four nights on bed & breakfast basis at the Table Bay Hotel. Located in the very heart of Cape Town’s Waterfront, the Table Bay was one of the area’s first hotels, and it still remains one of its finest. Situated within walking distance of a plethora of shops and restaurants, and family attractions which include an aquarium, big wheel, playground and boat trips, this five-star hotel is perfect for all ages as it offers a selection of family rooms as well as a heated swimming pool, kiddie’s menus and child-minding services.
Travel out of Cape Town along the coast to stay for two nights on full board basis, to include selected activities, at the Grootbos Private Nature Reserve.
Overlooking Walker Bay, this hillside reserve allows guests to experience the Cape's floral kingdom and fascinating bird, mammal and marine life. The luxury en-suite cottages have large living rooms, spacious wooden decks and fabulous ocean views, with Grootbos renowned for hospitality, personalised attention and outstanding service.
There is a wide range of nature-orientated activities, from nature drives and trails through fynbos and forests, to horse-riding along the beach and boat trips to view the nearby seal colony. Boat excursions are also offered for guests to cage-dive amongst the Great White Sharks or to get close to the Southern Right Whales, which can easily be spotted from August to December. Families are particularly well catered for, with special family suites and educational activities offered.
Drive onward to Plettenberg Bay to stay for three nights on bed & breakfast basis at Hunter’s Country House. Previously a winner of South Africa’s best hotel, Hunter’s is a delightful family-owned retreat set amidst a forest 10 minutes drive outside Plettenberg Bay, and has been almost purpose-built for families.
There are family suites with private pools, a special children-only recreation area, a child-minding service and a kiddies menu, so the grown-ups can relax in the grounds, be pampered with a massage or explore the coast & the Tsitsikamma Mountains and not worry.
Continue via Port Elizabeth to the Amakhala Game Reserve to stay for three nights on full board basis, including safari activities, at Hlosi Game Lodge.
The family suites at this malaria-free safari lodge, which sits on a gentle hill above a river plain, are perfect for mum, dad and the kids. The two en-suite bedrooms are separated by a lounge which opens out onto a deck overlooking the plain - ideal for spotting passing animals. There is a special educational children’s programme on offer – Cubs on Safari - with mini-game drives, face-painting and bug-hunting all highlights. Adults can also enjoy bushwalks, or the whole family can just relax around the sparkling pool.
Return hire car at Port Elizabeth airport and depart on the flight to Johannesburg, connecting with the direct overnight flight to the UK.
Arrive London early morning.
