Exploring western Tanzania brings a vast treasure of wildlife and nature experiences. The immense Ruaha National Park gives a great insight into the wilderness with guided walking safaris allowing a real up close and personal bushveld experience. The lesser known Katavi National Park offers some of the largest buffalo herds and is as wild as you'll have found it in the years of the explorers. Finally the Greystoke Mountains National Park allows an experience like no other - get off-grid and trek the forest for resident chimpanzees in their natural surroundings.
Accommodation includes: Hyatt Regency Dar-es-Salaam, Kigelia Ruaha, Chada Katavi and Greystoke Mahale
Overnight flight from the UK to Addis Abba
Connecting with a flight to Dar-es-Salaam you arrive in the city and settle in to enjoy an afternoon at leisure. Visit a local market or simply enjoy the facilities at the Hyatt Regency.
Board the small plane transfer to Ruaha, you'll be met at the landing strip in the Ruaha National Park and transferred to the semi-permanent mobile tented Kigelia Ruaha. The camp offers the opportunity to immerse yourself in the African wilderness in true 'Out of Africa' style. Situated on the banks of the Ifuguru Sand River the luxury camp offers the opportunity to explore the wilderness in comfort.
After settling in you'll have the afternoon at leisure and in the late afternoon head off on a game drive to spot the resident wildlife. Ruaha is a vast National Park with loads of predators that are supported by the antelope and other game species. Look out for lions, hyenas, elephants and wild dogs, but especially rare and prized to see are the Roan & Sable Antelope that are usually only found in Southern Africa's National Parks. Accommodation at Kigelia Camp is provided on a full board basis.
The next two days are spent enjoying the activities that allow you to explore the wildlife, birdlife and natural surroundings in the Ruaha. Enjoy sundowners in the most exquisite surroundings after a day out on a game drive or walking in the African bushveld.
After breakfast you'll game drive to the airstrip before meeting your light aircraft transfer to the Katavi National Park. Few people take the time to explore this remote wilderness which gives a unique feeling of remoteness and allows for visitors to truly immerse themselves in the untouched bushveld experience. Katavi is known for its massive herds of buffalo who are closely followed by the lion prides providing an incredible interaction that one may be lucky enough to see.
Accommodation is at the Chada Katavi luxury camp in tented suites on a full board basis. The camp is simple but provides a comfortably luxurious stay and is superbly located for the best game viewing experience. Whether you're heading out on a day drive, night game drive or on foot, there is plenty to see and discover. The adventurous may opt for a fly-camping experience of 'roughing it' overnight in the wilderness for a truly wild experience.
Rise early to the sound of the wilderness and head out to explore. The rangers and guides ensure you'll have the very best experience and bring in all the little details that make a safari here so special. The hotter hours of the day are spent at leisure at camp where the chef serves up the tastiest meals. Enjoy the wilderness and unique experience the Katavi has to offer.
Enjoy breakfast before heading back to the airstrip for the short flight to Lake Tanganyika. On arrival, you'll be transferred the remainder of the way to the Mahale Mountains National Park by boat across the vast Lake. The freshwater lake is the second largest lake in Africa and is home to a variety of endemic fish species and offers lovely secluded beach fronts along its shore. On arrival at Greystoke Mahale you'll settle in and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure. Accommodation is provided on a full board basis.
The biggest draw card to this National Park is undoubtedly the option to spot chimpanzees in their natural habitat and you'll have the opportunity to head up into the mountains and explore in search of these intelligent creatures. Along the way you'll also get to see the forest with its many bird species and natural environment to delight in. The camp itself is located on the shore of the lake and offers fishing, snorkelling, kayaking in addition to trekking the forest and surrounding mountains. Enjoy the remote, untouched feel of this part of Tanzania and unwind knowing you're in one of the most special places you'll ever see.
You will depart Greystoke Mahale and be taken to the airstrip for your flight to Dar es Salaam where you'll connect to an overnight flight to London via Addis Abba
