1. Matetsi Victoria Falls
Upstream from Victoria Falls and situated on a private game reserve, Matetsi Victoria Falls is a haven of tranquillity that enjoys 15 kilometres of exclusive river frontage. The falls themselves and the various activities in the area, such as helicopter trips, are easily accessible and guests can also enjoy game drives and walks on the 55,000 hectare reserve where elephants, lions and more can be found. The lodge is actually two camps each with nine suites and its own guest area overlooking the river. The two camps share a central lodge area with a swimming pool, gym and wine cellar. 2. Camelthorn Lodge, Hwange National Park
Set in one of Hwange National Park’s last remaining well-protected and un-spoilt acacia woodlands, Camelthorn is a paradise for birders and those who are looking for a less traditional safari experience. The lodge is set 1km from the nearest waterhole, so animals cannot be seen directly from the lodge, however this protects the forest from the elephants and means that birdlife can be found in abundance. A specially designed hide looks on to the waterhole and guests can be escorted up here whenever they wish to view the animals coming in to drink. Accommodation is in 8 luxuriously furnished villas that each have fantastic views out into the forest and their own maisonette areas where guests can relax, enjoy their meals and even sleep out under the stars.
3. Gorges Lodge, Victoria Falls
Gorges Lodge sits on the rim of the Batoka Gorge, 250 metres above the mighty Zambezi, giving it a location unique amongst all African Lodges. The ten stone and thatched cottages that make up the lodge sit along the rim of the gorge and with their own private garden and veranda, this is an ideal location to sit and enjoy the stunning views with a gin and tonic in hand. The birding is a real attraction here, with regular sightings of Black Eagles and a variety of raptors soaring high above the gorge. Guests also benefit from a regular shuttle service into Victoria Falls where they have the chance to enjoy the adrenalin fuelled activities for which the town is so well known, as well as the chance to explore The Falls themselves.
4. Bomani Tented Lodge, Hwange National Park
Commanding a wonderful location in a 5,000 acre private concession of the Ngamo Forest, Bomani Tented Lodge is perfect for visitors looking for a laid back safari experience. The emphasis here is on flexibility, with guests being offered the chance to tailor their safaris and activities around what they want to do.
