Namibia is a great country for self-drive holidays and Etosha National Park can easily be explored in your own vehicle and at your own pace. Beyond that this itinerary takes you to Okonjima to learn about their carnivore conservation and rehabilitation programme, a private reserve on the edge of Etosha and rugged Damaraland where you may be able to spot desert elephants.
Accommodation includes: Olive Grove Guesthouse, Okonjima Plains Camp, Onguma Tented Camp,Okaukuejo Camp, Dolomite Camp, Damaraland Camp and Ai-Aiba Lodge.
Overnight flight from Heathrow to Johannesburg on British Airways.
Morning arrival and connecting flight to Windhoek. Collect a hire car at the airport to begin your self-drive holiday. Stay tonight at Olive Grove Guesthouse in Windhoek.
This morning drive north to Okonjima Plains Camp, home of the Africat Foundation which is committed to the rehabilitation of big cats and where you can gain an insight into their conservation efforts at their information and care centre and on game drives to track radio collared leopards and seek out rare animals such as brown hyenas. You can track collared cheetahs and wild dogs on foot. You will stay for two nights at Okonjima Plains Camp with morning and afternoon activities included.
Continue north to the Onguma Nature Reserve, a private reserve on the eastern boundary of Etosha National Park for a two night stay at Onguma Tented Camp. Here you have the option to explore the national park in your own vehicle or take an optional game drive either in the park itself or on Onguma’s private land.
This morning, enter the national park and enjoy a self-drive safari through Etosha, travelling at your own pace and stopping at the various waterholes to view game such as elephant, giraffe, zebra, springbok and with luck, lion and cheetah. Spend the night at Okaukuejo Camp, famous for its active waterhole which is floodlit at night so your game viewing can continue after dark. Black rhino are regular visitors to the waterhole here.
Today, drive through the western part of the park, which until relatively recently was off limits to self-drive tourists, stopping enroute to spot animals on your way to Dolomite Camp which has a dramatic ridge-side setting and wonderful views.
Leaving Etosha you enter the stark and stunning scenery of Damaraland staying for two nights at the spectacularly located Damaraland Camp. Here you will join game drives with the camp’s expert guides in search of the animals that survive in this harsh environment including desert elephants.
Today, stop to view the rock engravings at Twyfelfontein before continuing south towards the Erongo mountains and a two night stay at Ai-Aiba Lodge, The Rock Painting Lodge. Here, you can stretch your legs on guided walks and enjoy bushman rock art, birdwatching and stunning views in this tranquil location, perfect for winding down after your safari.
Drive to Windhoek international airport and return the hire car prior to your afternoon flight to Johannesburg and overnight flight to Heathrow on British Airways.
