Botswana is one of the best places to go on safari with your family in Africa. Home to some of the most luxurious and exclusive safari camps on the continent, Botswana doesn't immediately seem like an ideal destination for most families. However, there are a number of lodges in the country that are perfectly equipped to provide young safari-goers with a truly exceptional Africa experience. Here are just a few of our favourites.

Chobe Safari Lodge, Chobe National Park

Chobe Safari Lodge is located in Kasane, on the border of the Chobe National Park, making it a superb starting point for your journey through Botswana. The lodge is a very good option for families, with 2 bedroom family units and a range of activities available to guests including game drives, river cruises and fishing. It also has a great swimming pool and buffet restaurant serving European and African cuisine.

Footsteps Camp, Okavango Delta

Located in a remote part of the Okavango Delta, Footsteps Camp offers a safari in the old fashioned sense of the word, you sleep, eat and walk in the bush - but not at any cost to luxury. The camp accommodates up to six guests in three specially-designed twin-bedded Meru tents including one family tent that sleeps three. The camp also offer a Young Explorers package, a specially designed safari which offers families the opportunity to discover the wonders of the African wilderness together.

Jack’s Camp, Makgadikgadi Pans

Situated on the border of the Makgadikgadi Pans in the Kalahari, Jack’s Camp is a welcome oasis in a harsh yet beautiful environment. Accommodation comprises 10 spacious canvas tents complete with an en suite bathroom plus indoor and outdoor showers. The camp welcomes children of all ages who can be accommodated in their parent's tents on a bed roll. There are a plethora of activities to keep everyone in the family happy including quad biking, game drives and horseback and meerkat safaris.

Chobe Bush Lodge, Chobe National Park

Located in Kasane, on the border of the Chobe National Park, Chobe Bush Lodge offers guests the chance to enjoy a multitude of activities, from traditional game drives to walks, boat trips, birding excursions and visits to the nearby Victoria Falls. The lodge is great for families with large 2 bedroom family units, a large swimming pool and buffet restaurant that serves both European and local cuisine.

Sanctuary Chief’s Camp, Okavango Delta

Set on a remote island in the Okavango Delta, Sanctuary Chief’s Camp is consistently rated one of the top safari camps in Botswana by Conde Nast Traveller and Travel and Leisure. The camp has recently been renovated and their two bedroom Geoffrey Kent Suite that features its own guide and vehicle is perfect for families. Children staying at the camp also have their own dedicated area where they can  learn about African nature from expert guides who love to delight with their fun dung facts and quirks about Botswana’s indigenous wildlife. The children’s area also houses a PlayStation, foosball table and fancy dress area.

Camp Kalahari, Makgadikgadi Pans

The Makgadikgadi Pan is one of the remotest parts of Botswana and a stay at Camp Kalahari allows you to experience the unique landscape and activities of the area in traditional style. The tented rooms are simple, comfortable and offer superb views out onto the pan. Families are well catered for at the camp with its two bedroom family tent and a variety of activities to keep everyone happy including quad biking, meerkat safaris and game drives. A 50% discount also applies to children between 6 to 11 years of age.

&Beyond Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge, Moremi Game Reserve

Situated on a private concession in the Okavango Delta, &Beyond Sandibe is set under a canopy of palm and fig trees overlooking one of the Delta’s channels. The camp is very family friendly and features a family suite and one tent that can be configured as a triple, allowing parents the option to have their children close by. &Beyond Sandibe also have their incredible WILDChild programme which includes various activities to educate and entertain children. When children arrive at the camp they receive a back pack containing a logbook, crayons, pencils and a paw print tattoo. There is also a personalised welcome note for every child, with those under three receiving an African-themed soft toy too.
