When thinking of a location for a beach break most people would not think of a land-locked country but there a number of resorts on the shores of Lake Malawi where you can relax on the beach and enjoy watersports and fresh water diving and snorkelling.
On the south-western tip of Likoma Island you will find Kaya Mawa where you can relax in the friendly and informal atmosphere of this unique getaway. Nestled on the lakeshore amongst rocky knolls and boabab trees the resort's rooms are all individually designed using natural materials and hand crafted furniture. The two bedroom family houses are right on the beach and for those looking for more exclusivity and privacy Ndomo House, a four bedroomed villa, has its own staff and private beach.
Lake Malawi offers arguably the world's best fresh water diving and Kaya Mawa has a PADI dive centre for those looking for adventure among the colourful cichild fish while snorkelling, kayaking and windsurfing are also available. Exploring Likoma Island is hugely popular and many find visits to the markets and cathedral and meeting the friendly locals a rewarding experience.
A brilliant beach escape for families or couples alike whether you want to chill or keep busy exploring the lake and the island.
Buffet breakfasts and lunches are served in the lake side restaurant while dinners may be taken in a number of locations including on the beach or your deck.
There are eleven stone and teak thatched rooms, all individually designed and making use of natural, hand crafted, reclaimed and recycled materials. Most rooms have direct access to the lake and some have their own plunge pools and sitting areas while the family cottages each have two bedrooms. For the ultimate retreat the four bedroom villa, Ndomo House, comes with its own staff, pool and private beach.
Kaya Mawa is perfect for families which want to stick together. There are two stunning villas – the Ulissa is big enough for a family of 5, while Yofu is perfect for a family of 4. Slightly set back you are kept to yourselves. There is also a 4 bedroom house – The Ndomo, which is great when it comes to multi-generational groups travelling together.
