This is hippo central on the banks of the Shire River in Liwonde National Park, Malawi’s premier wildlife reserve. In fact Mvuu means hippo, and this is indeed the place to see and enjoy all aspects of these great rumbling creatures.
Along with hippos there are plentiful sightings of crocodile, elephant and leopard as well as hundreds of species of bird. At certain times guests do not even have to move from the lodge or its own private viewing area to spot the wildlife.
Accommodation is in eight spacious tented suites, each of which is raised over a lagoon to make the most of the magical views.
Malawi’s original safari camp, Mvuu is still going strong and attracting safari lovers. Although the emphasis is on water, with boat trips ever popular, the land-based activities – game drives, walks and cycling trails – are also excellent. Mvuu combines very well with one of the lake side properties for a bush and beach break.
Mvuu Lodge is small and intimate, in a stunning and secluded setting. Four large en suite tents and a unique stone and thatch honeymoon suite are situated on the edge of a lagoon, off the river, each with a private view of the lagoon. A raised thatched dining area overlooks the lagoon and the nearby swimming pool is made of natural rock.
There is no kids club, but children are welcomed above the age of 6.
