South Africa is home to lots of amazing properties, but there are a few that are extra special. We've put together a list of the ones we think really stand out from the crowd.
1. The Silo, Cape Town
Located above the V&A Waterfront surrounded by the natural wonder of South Africa’s Mother City, the Silo is the latest in the storied line of Liz Biden's Royal Portfolio collection of luxury hotels and lodges. The hotel has been built in the grain elevator portion of the historic grain silo complex and features 28 suites that have been individually designed and decorated by the stylish wand of Liz Biden with colourful and eclectic pieces, as well as high pillowed glass windows showcasing the natural wonder of Cape Town. A truly extraordinary property that brings a new level of luxury and style to the Mother City's hotel scene.
2. Babylonstoren, Wine Region
Babylonstoren is one of the best preserved farms of the Cape Dutch tradition. The manor house dates from 1777 and some of the buildings date back to the founding of the farm in 1692. The working farm is a great place to relax and makes a wonderful base from which to explore the winelands. The farm is spread over 200 hectares where you can enjoy guided walks around the grounds or simply stroll at your leisure. There is also a spa on site, a gym to use and you can either swim or take a boat out in the dam. Picnic lunches and dinners can also be arranged, as can sundowners over a glass of the local wine.
3. Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, Western Cape
Nestled between mountain and sea, the Grootbos Private Nature Reserve is a five-star eco-paradise showcasing the incredible Flora and Marine life of the Southern Tip of Africa. The wildlife enthusiast will love the whale-watching, shark-diving and horse-riding, and the modern suites & spa will keep the sybarite happy. However, Grootbos is about more than just luxury accommodation and eco adventures. Your visit directly contributes to the conservation efforts of the Grootbos Foundation as well as the development of sustainable nature-based livelihoods amongst local communities. A one-of-a-kind luxury African experience!
4. Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge, Kruger National Park
An extraordinary property from the famed Sabi Sabi portfolio, Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge is built around the curves of the earth, in the colour of the earth and is one of the most environmentally-sensitive lodges in Africa. With just 13 suites it provides an intimate safari experience, with each of the suites offering spacious living, sleeping and bathing accommodation as well as a large viewing deck and private plunge pool. Those wanting to stay in the room where a tree appears to be magically growing out of the bed towards the ceiling need to book the Amber Presidential Suite, which boasts its own steam room, study and kitchen.
5. The Turbine Boutique Hotel & Spa, Garden Route
An old power station transformed into a five-star luxury hotel on Knysna’s Thesen Island, The Turbine Boutique Hotel & Spa is a salute to industrial architecture as all the old machinery has been incorporated into the design. Surrounded by water on three sides, the hotel is filled with light and space throughout its 23 suites. There are excellent restaurants on-site and nearby, with the spacious pool area being a favourite place to relax and enjoy a summer’s afternoon.
