South Africa's Great Golfing Getaways

South Africa boasts an abundance of fantastic golf courses and resorts, yet seems to fly under the radar when people are planning a golf trip, which is always a shame, especially in our UK winter months when it is wonderfully warm in South Africa and ideal conditions for golf. With overnight flights in both directions and very little jet lag, it is feasible to do a long weekend at one of the many wonderful resorts, or enjoy a longer tour and play some of the countries finest courses.


The Table Bay Hotel
For Cape Town, we would recommend a stay in The Table Bay Hotel, ideally located on the V&A Waterfront, with easy access to the roads out of Cape Town so you can get to the golf courses nice and quickly. There are plenty of excellent restaurants a 7 iron’s hit away from the front of the hotel, so you don’t have to venture far away. During a 5 night stay, you can enjoy 4 rounds of golf at some of Cape Town’s best golf courses, including the historic Royal Cape Golf Club, Minerton and Clovelly. As a real treat, we will also include a round at Pearl Valley in Paarl, just over an hour’s drive from Cape Town.

This Jack Nicklaus signature course has played host to a number of South African Opens over the years and is rightly regarded as one of the best courses in the country and well worth the drive. A superb restaurant and stunning views compliment the experience. A 5-night stay at The Table Bay, including BA flights, car hire and 4 rounds of golf starts from £2145pp based on 2 sharing.



The Plettenberg
The Garden Route has always been popular with golfers, especially from the UK as many of the courses have traditional seaside links feel to them. We would suggest a stay in The Plettenberg, which is right in the heart of Plettenberg Bay with stunning sea views and again offers easy access to many of the surrounding courses. The drive from George is about an hour, but within half an hour of the hotel, there are many fantastic courses to enjoy.

During a 5-night stay, we would recommend 4 rounds of golf, including Pezula, Plettenberg Bay Country Club, Simola and Goose Valley. This will give you time to explore Plettenberg Bay and the surrounding area as well, including an Ocean Safari, visits to the Tsitsikamma Forest and the quaint town of Knysna. Sun City
In addition to enjoying golf tours and a variety of golf courses, South Africa boasts a number of world-class golf resorts, where some of the country’s best hotels offer a golf course (or courses) to match. The most well know of these are Sun City, home to the annual Nedbank Challenge and Fancourt on The Garden Route, which played host to the 2003 Presidents Cup.

Sun City offers a choice of 4 hotels, from the 3* Cabanas up to the 5* Palace of the Lost City. Whichever hotel you choose, you will be assured of superb facilities, including access to the wave pool, Sun City Casino and a host of activities including quad bike excursions and day trips into the beautiful Pilanesberg National Park. Fancourt
Fancourt’slocation near to George makes it an ideal stopping point on a long trip through South Africa, but it can also be visited as a stand-alone destination and is a great base for exploring The Garden Route. The hotel is superb, with a great choice of places to eat, spacious comfortable rooms and excellent facilities including a gym and spa. There is also a Manor House, where you can enjoy even more upmarket accommodation in a slightly more tranquil location.

Fancourt boasts three golf courses; The Montagu, The Outeniqua and The Links. The Links is reserved for members and residents of the Fancourt Hotel only, so you are assured of total exclusivity and easy access to the course when staying at the hotel. 7 nights at Fancourt, including 5 rounds between the Outeniqua and the Montagu as well as one on The Links, all flights and transfers costs from £2675 per person, based on 2 sharing.



Leopard Creek
A short footnote about the extraordinary Leopard Creek as well. This unique course is normally members only, however, a small handful of lodges in the local area have access to the course for their guests. Lodges such as Sabi Sabi, Leopard Hills and Singita all offer access to the course and transfers from the lodges to the course can be arranged.
