The Makokola Retreat

Overview

This is Malawi’s premier resort – a lakeside paradise on a palm-fringed beach on the southern shores of the lake. It is the place to retreat to after days in the bush, to refresh and relax on the water’s edge.

Each of its rooms and villas are based on the traditional African rondavel, with thatched roofs and local materials and fabrics used in the interiors. Family rooms are available, with all of the room types being within walking distance of the golden sands. The resort also offers a wide choice of water and land-based activities from sailing and squash, to windsurfing and golf.

Highlights

Our Thoughts

As near as Malawi gets to a typical beach hotel, but only if having your own 9-hole golf course and airstrip is typical. All of the rooms are based on the traditional rondavel style and a full range of sport activities is available. The sailing trips offered are highly recommended.

Dining at the Makokola Retreat is an eclectic experience. Guests can savour fine Mediterranean cuisine, celebrate the tastes of Malawi or feast on Italian specialties in their casual restaurant and bar. A highlight to the Retreat is the use of local ingredients, grown by the local community on the property. Their natural settings will inspire you …claim a lakeside table, swim to the poolside bar, join them on a theme night or sit on a torch lit terrace by the beach for an unforgettable meal.

All villas are hand built, giving them that authentic African feel. Locally sourced wood beams and traditional art work decorate the inside, while it’s sealed with a beautiful thatched roof. Malawian themed, handcrafted furniture and local fabrics and rich colours adorn the surroundings, making it feel homely and instantly welcoming. And with four villa styles to choose from, there is one for every traveller type.
