In Central Malawi lies the 1800 sq kilometre Nkhotakota Wildlife Reserve and nestled in the forest here on the banks of the Bua River is Tongole Wilderness Retreat. It enjoys an idyllic setting and provides the perfect opportunity to explore nature at a more leisurely pace.
Rather than racing around on a game vehicle ticking off animals here you can a take a slow safari, stopping to explore the flora and fauna on a guided walk, taking a hike to waterfall or canoeing on the forest-fringed river. As well as being personally enriching a stay at Tongole benefits the local community as the lodge's foundation supports education and employment in the area.
The wildlife at Nkhotakota continues to goes from strength to strength with one of the largest translocations of elephants and thousands of other animals including sable and buffalo.
Take time out for a slow safari at Tongole, taking a gentle canoe trip on the Bua River, a leisurely bush walk or just soak up the peace and tranquillity of this beautiful wilderness.
All of the exquisite food is prepared on site with as many ingredients locally sourced as possible.
Meals are prepared by their in house chef and can be enjoyed in any one of the lodge's 4 guest areas.
The lodge has just three riverside suites plus a family suite which consists of two units connected by an expansive deck.
The open fronted suites offer privacy and seclusion, nestled in the forest looking out over the river. Built from local materials the rooms sit perfectly in their natural surroundings and even come with a sunken bath with a view.
